3-Phase vs DALI Track: How to Choose the Right System

Both tracks carry the same three phases and the same 16 A per phase. The difference is two extra conductors, and what they let you do with every luminaire on the line.

Three-phase DALI track 601, black

A 3-phase track (4-wire) carries three switched phases, L1, L2 and L3, and a common neutral. A 3-phase DALI track (6-wire) carries the same four conductors plus a two-wire DALI control pair. Both run on 230 V per phase, 400 V between phases, at up to 16 A per phase. If the people who run the space only need to switch groups of luminaires on and off, 3-phase track is enough. If they need to dim individual spots, recall scenes or connect sensors, choose DALI.

The short answer

What the two systems share

A DALI track is a 3-phase track with two more conductors. The power side is identical, which is why the two systems can be mixed in one building and why the same feeds, fixings and suspension parts often fit both.

  • Three phases and a neutral. L1, L2 and L3 can be fed from one phase or from three phases. The neutral is shared.
  • Rating. 230 V per phase, 400 V between phases, up to 16 A per phase. The limit comes from the track standard, IEC/EN 60570, which covers tracks up to 440 V and 16 A per conductor.
  • Earth on the profile. The aluminium body is the protective conductor path; couplers and connectors carry it across joints.
  • Mounting. Surface, recessed, trimless and suspended versions exist for both. See the 3-phase surface track GT-4W-T and the 3-phase DALI surface track GT-6W-T.
  • Power adapters. Standard 3-phase adapters such as the 10 A adapter GT-4W-AD10 fit both profiles. On DALI track they take power and ignore the DALI pair.

DALI limits to plan for

DALI is defined in IEC 62386. Four limits shape every DALI track layout:

  • 64 short addresses per line. A gallery with 120 spots needs two DALI lines, which normally means two separate track runs or a split at an insulated coupler.
  • 250 mA bus current. One DALI bus power supply delivers at most 250 mA. Each driver draws up to 2 mA, and sensors and push-button couplers draw more.
  • 300 m line length, 2 V drop. Total cable and track length on one line must keep the bus voltage drop within 2 V; with 1.5 mm² conductors that is about 300 m.
  • No polarity. The two DALI conductors can be swapped without harm, which makes wiring the feeds simpler.

The DALI pair has basic insulation, not SELV separation. That is what allows it to sit in the same profile as the mains conductors, and it also means it must be treated as live during work on the track.

Where the cost difference comes from

Buyers often compare the price per metre of track and stop there. In a finished installation the track is a small part of the difference. This is how the cost builds up:

As a rough guide for a retail fit-out, the track, feeds and connectors of a DALI system cost 15–25% more than the 3-phase equivalent; the DALI drivers and controls add more than that. The return comes from energy saved by dimming and sensors, and from changing the light without an electrician.

Future-proofing: install DALI, use it later

Because standard 3-phase adapters work on DALI track, many specifiers install DALI track from day one and run it as a plain 3-phase system until the client needs control. The extra cost is in the track and feeds only. When the time comes, luminaires are switched to DALI driver adapters such as GT-6W-DA31 and the DALI pair is connected to a controller. The reverse, adding control to a plain 3-phase track later, means replacing the track.

If the building also needs escape-route lighting from the same track, look at the 8-wire DALI + emergency track GT-8W-T, which adds a separate emergency phase to the DALI layout.

Questions to answer before you order

  1. Who will change the light after handover: staff with a switch, or a facility manager with an app?
  2. How many luminaires per track run? More than 64 on one run means two DALI lines.
  3. Are sensors, scenes or tunable white in the brief, now or within the next refit?
  4. Is a DALI controller already planned for the building, or would the track be the only DALI system?
  5. Will one supplier provide track, feeds and driver adapters, so that every part is listed as compatible?

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a standard 3-phase adapter on DALI track?

Usually yes. A 3-phase DALI track keeps the three phases and the neutral in the same positions as a standard 3-phase track, so a standard 3-phase adapter takes power from it and simply ignores the DALI pair. Check that the adapter is listed as compatible with the DALI profile before you order.

How many luminaires can one DALI line control?

One DALI line addresses up to 64 control gear devices individually, in up to 16 groups and 16 scenes (IEC 62386). Larger installations use several lines joined by a DALI controller or gateway.

Is DALI track much more expensive than 3-phase track?

The track itself costs somewhat more because it has two more conductors. Most of the price difference in a project comes from DALI driver adapters, the DALI bus power supply, the controller and the time spent addressing and commissioning.

Do I need a separate cable for the DALI signal?

No. The DALI pair has basic insulation and may share the supply cable and the track with mains conductors. The total DALI line length should stay within 300 m and the bus voltage drop within 2 V.
