Why European Retailers Are Switching to Track-Based Lighting Systems

Store layouts now change faster than the lighting designed for them. Track turns the ceiling into an outlet that runs the length of the shop, so the light can follow the merchandise.

A modern interior lit by overhead spotlights

European retailers are moving to track-based lighting for four reasons: store layouts change several times a year, LED spotlights now deliver the same accent light at a fraction of the energy, EU rules have removed the fluorescent and halogen lamps that older stores were built around, and DALI track lets one lighting installation run several scenes. The shift is most visible in fashion, beauty, furniture and food retail, where the merchandise moves faster than the ceiling.

Five forces behind the move to track

1. Layouts change faster than ceilings

Seasonal collections, promotional islands, brand concessions and pop-up formats mean a sales floor may be rearranged four to six times a year. Fixed downlights are positioned for the layout on the day the ceiling closes. Track spots slide to the new display, click out and back in, and are re-aimed in minutes. Visual merchandising teams can do it themselves, which removes an electrician from every change.

2. EU rules removed the old lamp technology

The Ecodesign lighting regulation (EU) 2019/2020, in force since 1 September 2021, set efficiency limits that most halogen and many discharge lamps cannot meet. RoHS exemptions for mercury in compact fluorescent lamps ended in February 2023, and for T5 and T8 linear fluorescent tubes in August 2023. Stores built around these lamps face a full refit rather than a lamp change, and a refit is the moment a retailer can choose a track-based layout.

3. LED made accent lighting affordable to run

Energy prices in Europe rose sharply in 2022 and have remained a board-level topic for retailers. LED spots on track use a fraction of the power of the halogen spots they replace. An illustrative 200 m² store:

Illustrative energy comparison for 80 accent spots

Power per spot50 W15 W
Connected load4.0 kW1.2 kW
Operating hours per year3,5003,500
Energy per year14,000 kWh4,200 kWh
Cost per year at €0.20/kWh€2,800€840

Illustrative figures; actual savings depend on the luminaires, opening hours and tariff. Dimming and sensors on DALI track reduce the LED figure further.

4. Controls moved into the track

A 3-phase DALI track carries a control pair beside the three phases. Each spot gets its own address, so one installation can hold a daytime scene, an evening scene, a window scene after closing and a cleaning scene. Daylight sensors near the façade and presence sensors in fitting rooms and stockrooms cut energy use further. For new buildings and major renovations, building energy rules increasingly expect this kind of control.

5. Track survives the refit

The aluminium track, the feeds and the fixings outlast several generations of luminaires. In a refit only the spots, or just their driver adapters, change. Aluminium is recyclable, and a standard 3-phase track accepts luminaires from many brands that use the common three-phase adapter, which keeps future purchasing open. Check the compatibility of adapter and profile before mixing brands.

How much light: EN 12464-1 for retail

The European standard for workplace lighting, EN 12464-1, sets maintained illuminance for the areas where staff work. Accent light on merchandise comes on top of these figures, typically three to five times the ambient level on feature displays.

Maintained illuminance for retail areas
AreaMaintained illuminanceTypical lighting
Sales area300 lxAmbient plus track spots on displays
Till area500 lxDownlights or track spots over the counter
Wrapping table500 lxLocal light
Store rooms100 lx1-phase track or batten luminaires

Which track for which store

  • Fashion, beauty and lifestyle: 3-phase DALI track with DALI driver adapters, for scenes and individual dimming.
  • Supermarkets and discount stores: 3-phase track, switched by zone, often suspended on wire over long aisles.
  • Small shops and shop windows: 1-phase track on a single phase.
  • Department stores and malls with escape routes through the sales floor: 8-wire DALI + emergency track.
  • Clean ceilings: recessed or trimless track, such as trimless track GT-4W-TT, which sits flush with the plaster.

What this means for buyers and specifiers

  1. Specify the track separately from the luminaires. The track stays for ten years or more; luminaires may change with every concept.
  2. Choose DALI track when in doubt. It runs standard 3-phase adapters today and DALI drivers later.
  3. Standardise colours across the estate. Black and white cover most concepts; a brand colour can be powder-coated to order.
  4. Buy a complete system from one source. Track, feeds, connectors, suspension and adapters that are tested together avoid loose joints and earth faults.

Frequently asked questions

Why do shops use track lighting instead of downlights?

Track lets staff move, add and re-aim spotlights anywhere along the track without an electrician, so the light can follow changing displays. Downlights are fixed at the positions chosen when the ceiling was built.

Which EU rules ended fluorescent lighting in shops?

The Ecodesign lighting regulation (EU) 2019/2020 applies since September 2021. Under the RoHS Directive, the exemptions for compact fluorescent lamps ended in February 2023 and for T5 and T8 linear fluorescent tubes in August 2023.

How much light does a sales area need?

EN 12464-1 gives a maintained illuminance of 300 lx for retail sales areas and 500 lx for till areas. Accent lighting on displays is usually several times the ambient level.

Can existing track be reused in a store refit?

Yes, if it is in good condition and the luminaires use the same adapter type. Reusing track and fixings is one of the reasons retailers prefer track: only the luminaires or driver adapters are replaced.
